Viscera
Stomach
vessels
left gastric artery: branches off celiac trunk, runs along the lesser curvature; also has esophageal branch
right gastric artery: branch of hepatic artery proper; runs along lesser curvature; anastamoses with the left gastric artery
left gastroepiploic artery: branch of splenic artery; runs along greater curvature; anastamoses with right epiploic
right gastroepiploic artery: branch of gastroduodenal; runs along greater curvature
short gastric arteries: short branches of the splenic artery; supply left side of stomach
veins parallel the arteries, but their course is highly variable
cardia, fundus/body, antrum, pylorus
Spleen
vessels
splenic artery: branch of celiac trunk
splenic vein: joins with the inferior mesenteric behind the pancreas and then joins the superior mesenteric to form the portal vein
Major Duodenal Papilla: located 8 - 10 cm from the pylorus; raised structure that houses the ampulla of Vater
Ampulla of Vater (hepatopancreatic ampulla): short duct that is combination of pancreatic duct and common bile duct controlled by the sphincter of Oddi
Main Pancreatic Duct: begins at the tail of the pancreas and runs to the ampulla of Vater
- accessory pancreatic duct may or may not exist (superior to the main duct)
Liver
Lobes: left; right; caudate; quadrate (divided by an ‘H’ shaped fissure)
Fissures
Right Sagittal Fossa: imaginary line runs through gall bladder fossa and fossa for the IVC
Left Sagittal Fissure: contains the ligamentum venosum and the round ligament (ligamentum teres)
Transverse Fissure (porta hepatus): contains portal vein, hepatic artery proper, hepatic ducts
Round Ligament (ligamentum teres): forms free edge of falciform ligament; obliterated umbilical vein
Ligamentum Venosum: remnant of the ductus venosis
Bile Passages: hepatic ducts (right and left) in liver converge to form the common hepatic duct; cystic duct of gall bladder joins to form the common bile duct; pancreatic duct joins at the ampulla of Vater at the duodenum
Gall Bladder
lies in gallbladder fossa along right edge of the quadrate lobe; connects to common bile duct via cystic duct
Duodenum
four parts (1st: superior; 2nd: descending; 3rd: horizontal; 4th: ascending)
has plicae circulares
Jejunum
proximal; upper left quadrant; thicker walls; long vasa recti; simple arcade pattern; no encroaching fat; plicae circulares present
Ileum
distal; lower right quadrant; thinner walls; short vasa recti; complicated arcade pattern; encroaching fat; no plicae circulares
Colon
contains haustra (sacculations) formed by teniae coli; plicae semilunares
Pancreas
Veins
Portal Veins
Inferior Vena Cava
Hepatic Veins
Arteries
Celiac Trunk
Splenic Artery
Left Gastric Artery
Hepatic Artery
Root of the Mesentery
Ligament of Treitz (Suspensory Muscle of the Duodenum): fibromuscular band; suspends duodenaljejunal junction to the right crus of the diaphragm
